Tasting Notes: An intensely concentrated and luscious fortified wine with very developed ripe fruit flavours. Dark gold in color with strong aromas of dried fruits.

This 5 Year Old Madeira starts life as fermenting must and is then fortified before undergoing its own very special maturation process. Made of predominantly Tinta Negra Mole Grapes, harvest begins from mid-August due to the warm southerly climate. A unique and highly sophisticated artificial Estufa process is set up for the 5 year old wines, where temperatures rise to 45ºC before being allowed to cool. This process takes 90 days and renders the wine completely stable. It is then aged in oak casks for 5 years, prior to bottling

Henriques & Henriques was founded on the island of Madeira in 1850 by Joao Joaquim Henriques, initiating the start of a rich history and a profound knowledge of the art of making Madeira.

In a nutshell: The benchmark of quality Madeira since 1850, Henriques & Henriques is one of the most famous names on the Portuguese island.

Currently under the leadership of Master Blender, Humberto Jardím, it is the only House to have consistently owned vineyards in Madeira, allowing them to control every aspect of the production process. They were the first producer to construct a purpose-built winery on the island and are innovative in both product development and design. In 1992, Henriques & Henriques undertook an expansion programme, investing in the construction of new premises in Câmara de Lobos and also building a new vinification centre at Quinta Grande.

A new generation of consumers are experimenting with matching drier styles of Madeira such as Sercial and Verdelho with savoury, umami-rich cuisine and discovering wonderful results. Henriques & Henriques boasts a wide range of Madeiras, including a number of vintage bottlings. These are rare from Madeira, and are an opportunity to experience highly sophisticated single year expressions. The House has consistently been recognised in international challenges for the quality of its wines, regularly receiving top scores and awards.

The terroir: Madeira is an island of volcanic origin and has mainly basaltic soils, which are acidic, rich in iron and phosphor and low in potassium, all contributing to the trademark acidity of the wines. The island’s relief is steep and different grape varieties grow at different altitudes. Madeira has a mild sub-tropical climate, with warm summer months and temperate winters.

The Henriques & Henriques ‘personality’: Award-winning wines, made by one of Madeira’s most famous producers, controlling every aspect of production to ensure consistent quality.
